Preparing for your Anti-foul Application

What you need ahead of time to ensure application success

Haul out time

What else is needed?

So you've got a haul out date and Marlin Yacht Paints Metal Primer and Velox Plus, but what else is needed?

Focus is brush or roller

In this post we look at what you need to ensure your Velox Plus application is successful. The focus is brush or roller application, not spray.

What to get

Set up

  • Fold out table
  • Grinder & extension power cord where not battery-driven
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE), personal preference and plenty of guides on the internet including this one SafeWork NSW
  • Screw-driver to open paint tin lids
  • Sanding block
  • and a milk crate or similar to sit on!

Consumables - the Basics

  • Wax & grease remover bunnings-link
  • Brushes, 1 for each coat, an inch to an inch and a half wide bunnings-link
  • Disposable gloves, large enough for the size of your hands
  • Bag of rags bunnings-link
  • Mixing container (for etch primer only & always mix by volume) bunnings-link
  • Mixing stick / stirrer bunnings-link
  • If it's a re-application of Velox Plus, fine paper (180-220 grit) or abrasive felt (Scotch Brite), no need for grinding / sanding consumables described below

Consumables - Grinding / Sanding

  • Clean & Brightening metal
    • Grinding discs 80 grit. Results will depend on the state of your legacy anti-foul and it's adhesion. If in doubt get half a dozen of each and see what works best. Match your grinder; 125cm or 115cm;
      • Flap disc
      • Strip disc
    • Sandpaper 80 grit, to clean where the grinder can't reach
  • Mechanical key, where Boating Products 2-pack Etch Primer is not in use;
    • Garnet (aluminium oxide) paper;
      • Paper/Roll, 80 grit
      • Grinding disc, 60 grit
    • Always use nice sharp garnet paper, if it's been overused it will no get enough micron depth
