Boating Products Etch Primer

In AU/NZ we recommend the use of our 2-part zinc-chromate etch primer, in addition to Marlin Yacht Paint's Metal Primer/Velox Plus. Why;

• Locally there is extensive use of silicon foul release. Silicon contaminates the metal strata, causing adhesion issues for the Metal Primer. Etch Primer completely mitigates this problem. Therefore, when moving away from silicon foul release, we highly recommend using Etch Primer before using Metal Primer.
• The further problem is locally many people do not know the difference between brightening metal vs a physical key (noted below as 80 grit garnet). If in doubt, use Etch Primer before using Metal Primer to completely mitigate this problem. 
• It is almost certainly not required when dealing with aluminium factory coating or epoxy primer surfaces. 

Surface Preparation

1. SURFACES ALREADY TREATED WITH VELOX PLUS IN GOOD CONDITION: Pressure wash with fresh water and/or sand very lightly with fine paper or abrasive felt. Leave to dry well. Do not remove old Velox Plus from previous season. Touch up Metal Primer as needed, then proceed to Velox Plus. 
2. SURFACES TREATED WITH UNKNOWN ANTIFOULING: Remove completely back to bare metal by stripping and/or mechanically sanding by hand or with random orbital.
3. BARE METAL PARTS (BRONZE, STAINLESS STEEL): Degrease, then sand with coarse (aluminium oxide) garnet paper (n. 80) or sandblast. A dual action rotary sander can be used (60 grit garnet). The surface must be very rough after sanding. Do not use worn out sandpaper. Do not use wet sandpaper.  Do not use Scotch Brite. We do not recommend sandblasting unless done by an experienced professional. After sanding, never wash with water, detergents, acids or generic solvents. Dust dry or wash with Wax & Grease remover and a clean rag. Change rag frequently, especially in case of new or folding propellers, which usually have more grease on them.
4. PARTS COATED WITH FACTORY PAINTS or EPOXY PRIMER: The stern-drives and other aluminium parts are normally treated with factory paints, which should never be removed. Degrease, sand lightly with fine paper (200 grit) or abrasive felt.

Notes:

• NEVER use acids, other solvents, water, detergents, soaps. 
• Note - We suggest protecting bare aluminium with an appropriate epoxy primer (typically 3 coats). This is not necessary when aluminium is already protected with factory finish (like new stern drives). On epoxy coatings or on factory finish, just lightly sand the surface with abrasive pad (like Scotch Brite) or fine sandpaper (180-220 grit). 

Application

• Where applying ETCH PRIMER, apply a light, thin coat. Leave at least 30 minutes - but not more than 5 hours - before proceeding to the next next step.
• Apply one coat of METAL PRIMER. Leave it to dry for at least 3 hours at 20°C. 
• Apply one coat of VELOX PLUS by brush. Apply it with continuous long brush strokes. Avoid going back and forth on the same spot, as this will soften too much the METAL PRIMER. Full coverage will not be achieved with first coat of VELOX PLUS. The first coat will normally slightly soften the primer, showing some of its green colour.
• Wait at least 3 hours at 20 °C then apply a second coat of VELOX PLUS. For best result, apply it by brush with long and continuous strokes, perpendicular to the brush strokes of the first coat. 
• For complete converge, we recommend a third coat of VELOX PLUS, again perpendicular to the second coat.

Notes

• Refer Application Guide to see photos of application coats.  
• With both METAL PRIMER or VELOX PLUS aim for wet film thickness 100 µm, which will result in dry film thickness 35 µm.
• We suggest removing all primer & VELOX PLUS back to bare metal every 3-5 years, subject to monitoring. 
• Do not apply METAL PRIMER or VELOX PLUS on any other antifouling. 
• Do not apply VELOX PLUS on bare metal without METAL PRIMER.

Drying Times

*If possible, we recommend letting both METAL PRIMER and VELOX PLUS dry well between one coat and another and before launching, especially in cases of high humidity or low temperatures. The ideal is to apply one coat of product per day and wait two days for launching.

Suggestions to follow

• When preparing bare metal for METAL PRIMER the surface should be keyed to 80 grit. Contrast this to ETCH PRIMER, where chemical bond requires less keying.  80 grit gives approximately 120 micron profile, resulting in 80 micron score in the metal.  
• NEVER use acids or acid-based products to descale or clean the metal surfaces before applying the METAL PRIMER (for example, the products normally used to dissolve barnacles or are acid-based).
• Do not use detergents, dirty solvents, or water to wash the surfaces after sanding.
• Do not touch the surfaces with bare hands before applying the METAL PRIMER.
• For cleaning the surface, use only wax and grease remover or equivalent with clean cloths.
• Do not apply in case of extreme humidity and/or strong temperature changes. Watch out for dew point and condensation on metals, especially early in the morning. If in doubt, the metal parts can be dried with a jet of hot air and the surfaces washed with a wax and grease remover or equivalent.
• Do not apply the product with temperatures below 5°C or above 38°C. In case of temperatures below 10°C it is important to wait at least 48 hours for launching after the last coat.
• The minimum drying times are indicative, it is always advisable to let the product dry for as long as possible between coats in any situation. Beware of high humidity, which significantly lengthens drying times. Whenever possible, we recommend waiting up to 24 hours or more between coats.
• To obtain an excellent result, the preparation of the surface is essential, which at the time of applying the METAL PRIMER must be very rough (the rougher it is, the better adhesion you will have) and clean, free from grease, dust or other dirt (even fingerprints sweat or traces of solvents or water).
• Never apply VELOX PLUS over any other type of antifouling or directly over bare metal.
• The product is ready to use, it is strongly advised not to dilute both METAL PRIMER and VELOX PLUS.
• Mix very thoroughly before use. The product may present a marked separation due to the heavy pigments present in the formulation.
• It is advisable not to stay connected to the electricity outlet when at mooring. Strong galvanic currents significantly reduce the effectiveness of antifouling for metal parts and can cause severe detachments.
• Bare aluminium parts without the factory paint must be treated with an anticorrosive epoxy cycle (e.g. 2-3 coats of epoxy primer) before applying METAL PRIMER.
• The treatment of the propellers and metal parts is delicate, we recommend that you do it before the other jobs in order to have enough time to do it in a workmanlike manner.
• Respect the recommended quantities to obtain a good result. The product is ready to use, the use of thinner is not recommended.
• In case of antifouling application several months before launching, it is preferable to keep the boat away from direct sunlight and rain (for example with a black plastic bag).
